How To Find Unseen Stories: A Walk Through Words. (Simmons Says #202)

Welcome to my newsletter!

"This time, a little something different ... maybe."

Hey, Reader, walk with me...

THREE BLOCKS AND TURNING

Sweatshirt salesman tour guide

Hawkers. Most predominantly people of color

Bridge This Way, Park that way

Have you ridden the Ferry?

A village of colorful caps hanging dangling, blowing in the breeze

one sale, many more passing by

An old student in white with Shades marching

Custom house siege. Elegant History of another time and space while dealing with present-day social issues.

Jam Jam. A typical rush hour traffic jam masks a deadly plot of death and destruction in tunnels that run beneath the sea.

A child's stroller, bent and alone

See the elderly couple finding rekindled love on a day trip to Manhattan, sun stinging their wrinkled, crinkled, twinkling eyes.

Bowling Green 45. No idea why that caught my attention, but it did.

Ah, cave paintings on an urban wall names, places, and people from long ago or yesterday.

A ball.

A man remembers the one good time he had with his estranged father at a baseball game so many long-lost years ago. That one came quickly with remembrances of my unseen dad.

She's blonde and too light to be black.

Speaking of Flashback, an anti-immigration Advocate learns a harsh lesson when they are thrown back in time to relive the treatments their ancestor suffered oh so not so long ago

Decades hardly matter much these days.

Does it matter now?

This was not real poetry. Unless one considers poetry to be a jigsaw jumble of words and unconscious streams of thoughts and ideas leaking or just running and splashing upon the page

One day, as an exercise with my students, I walked for two or three blocks and jotted down things that caught my eye.

One or two, I even let the thought drift a bit to see where it would take me to ask and answer my favorite two-word question: what if?

That's the power and magic of being a writer. Being an artist. Every day, there's something to reflect on or to reflect on.

So what will you write today?

Best,

Alex Simmons

Simmons Says

Hi, Alex Simmons here. I've taught 100s of aspiring and struggling writers how to overcome their fears and frustrations and create compelling plots, characters, and stories that appeal to a broader audience. Over the years, I've been honored to be a professional author (award-winner), writing coach/teacher, and consultant. I’ve written for many mainstream publishers, Marvel/DC/Archie Comics, and penned plays, interactive games, and video and animation scripts. And I’ve been a global speaker on empowering people through the arts. I have much to share, starting with my Simmons Says Newsletter.

Welcome to my newsletter! “What you write filters through who you are.” Reader, did you know ... I'm a person who was raised by a single parent — my mother — with regular visits to my grandmother and grandfather. However, many of the dominant role models I admired were fictional characters from television, films, books, and comics. One might assume that I learned the naïve lessons — that good always triumphs over evil, that being kind and generous leads to a loving and peaceful life, or that...

Welcome to my newsletter! “Two people, one terrible secret, and the pressure to reveal it before dawn.” Hey, Reader, Can you handle the heat? I've previously discussed Story Structure and the benefits of using Writing Prompts. Today, we’re going to use both. Here's a challenge for you: I’ll give you a framework for starting, developing, and finishing your story. The framework will be for a Microfiction (300 words or less) or Flash Fiction (500 -1000 words) tale. Here’s the prompt: Two people...

Welcome to my newsletter! "So Many Stories To Tell" You know, Reader, It's funny how I realize that in my effort always to offer some value and keep my focus on serving you, my readers, students, and clients, I tend not to promote the other things that I do. Or at least not to promote them too often. It's not a good business head, but it is the head of an artist still recovering from Lone Ranger syndrome. I’ll explain that some other time. So I'm going to take this opportunity to steer you...
