Why Your Story — and Your Voice — Matter More Than You Think (Simmons Says #211)

Welcome to my newsletter!

What you write filters through who you are.”

Reader, did you know ...

I'm a person who was raised by a single parent — my mother — with regular visits to my grandmother and grandfather.

However, many of the dominant role models I admired were fictional characters from television, films, books, and comics.

One might assume that I learned the naïve lessons — that good always triumphs over evil, that being kind and generous leads to a loving and peaceful life, or that when push comes to shove, the best in human beings would always come through.

But I didn't learn that. "Always" is a lot to ask.

I learned to value the idea that good should triumph over evil and to believe in its value truly.

But as I grew older, I came to understand that not everyone drank from the same pool.

I chose to be who I am as I grew older — with little regret, or less and less regret — because who I am is who I am.

I began to realize the value in that: caring less about what people think, acting more thoughtfully than impulsively, and continuing to try to see the value in my own beliefs, philosophies, and ethics.

So my stories — my writings — are about the human condition.

In some cases, there are several heroes, or someone who at least rises to the call for help.

  • I try to bring joy through some of my stories.
  • I challenge injustices in many of my stories.
  • I strive to reveal hidden histories through many of my stories, especially when they feature people of color or individuals who have been oppressed.

I learned that ...

  • My natural curiosity had value.
  • I gained knowledge by listening during conversations, not just talking.
  • Stories, fact or fiction, had power.
  • Bullying, bigotry, and hate were poison to my soul.

Basically, the more I learned about myself, the more I realized how much that influenced my writing — the more at home I was, and damn proud of the stories I choose to tell.

Every story you write marks the trail back to your most authentic self.

What about you influences what you write?

What piece of yourself have you been waiting to put into words? Start with one line. Just one.

Let me know.

Best,

Alex Simmons

Simmons Says

Hi, Alex Simmons here. I've taught 100s of aspiring and struggling writers how to overcome their fears and frustrations and create compelling plots, characters, and stories that appeal to a broader audience. Over the years, I've been honored to be a professional author (award-winner), writing coach/teacher, and consultant. I’ve written for many mainstream publishers, Marvel/DC/Archie Comics, and penned plays, interactive games, and video and animation scripts. And I’ve been a global speaker on empowering people through the arts. I have much to share, starting with my Simmons Says Newsletter.

Welcome to my newsletter! "Why They Do What They Do Matters." Hey,Reader, This time, I feel the need to talk about one of my favorite parts of storytelling: creating characters. A strong plot is important, but if your characters feel awkward, unbelievable, or just “off,” the story falls apart. And often the missing piece is one simple question: 👉 Why are they doing what they’re doing? In other words, what’s their motive? Motives are what drive characters to act — to betray friends, seek...

Welcome to my newsletter! "In a world where character is everything...What Are The Three Musketeers of Storytelling?" Grab a drink and sit back, Reader, This one is going to be a bit long because it’s about character creation, a little bit about research, and a little bit about the foundation that one can build with backstory. I want to take a little time to emphasize a point (or two or three) about the importance of character, research, and backstory. I’ll use my Blackjack series — and get...

Welcome to my newsletter! "Without this, your characters drift in a lifeless void." Forgive me, Reader, Originally, I planned to continue a piece about the question “what if” and the powers one can gain from asking that question when determining a plot, character, or story structure. And trust me, we’ll get to that in an upcoming issue. But as I sat with my notebook and a favorite cup of tea, something else pushed its way to the front of my creative mind: the incredible power of...
